Orange Cookies — Matter

A great strain name. An average eighth. Orange Cookies by Matter shows up smooth, smells faintly of citrus, and then does almost nothing else. At $35 the price is fair — but the NYC shelf has better options.

STRAIGHT UP

4 / 10

Orange Cookies by Matter has one of the most promising names in the NYC legal market right now — and one of the most underwhelming executions. The citrus is there if you go looking for it. The sativa effect barely shows up. At $35 for 3.5g it’s not a robbery, but it’s not a buy either.

OVERVIEW

The Buy

Orange Cookies is a GSC × Orange Skunk × Herijuana cross — a lineage that on paper should deliver complexity, citrus brightness, and a proper sativa uplift. Matter is a recognizable brand in New York's legal market. We picked this up at VereLeaf on 8th Ave in Chelsea for $35. The genetics are interesting. What ended up in the jar was not.

The name sells it. Orange Cookies sounds like exactly what you want on a Saturday afternoon — something sweet, citrusy, and functional. The reality is a mild, unremarkable sativa that plateaus early and doesn’t do much once it gets there. Nothing harsh, nothing offensive — just nothing particularly there.

TERPENE PROFILE — ORANGE COOKIES TYPICAL DOMINANTS

β-Caryophyllene 68%
Limonene 40%
β-Myrcene 22%

Limonene should be doing the heavy lifting here — it’s the terpene responsible for citrus brightness and mood elevation, the one that should make an Orange Cookies live up to its name. The problem is concentration. Whatever Limonene is present isn’t making itself known in the aroma or the effect in any meaningful way. The herbal warmth from Caryophyllene is the thing you actually notice, and that’s not what you’re buying an Orange Cookies for.

APPEARANCE & SMOKE

The Name Writes Checks the Flower Can’t Cash.

The buds are average — standard sativa structure, light green, thin orange hairs, nothing that stands out visually one way or another. The trim is adequate. Moisture is fine. Open the jar and you get a faint citrus note — earthy first, orange second, and only if you’re actively looking for it. This is a jar that does not announce itself.

The smoke is smooth enough. A hint of citrus on the inhale, warm herbal on the exhale. Not unpleasant. Not interesting. The effect arrives quickly and then immediately finds its ceiling — a mild, soft buzz that stays low and flat for the duration. Functional in the loosest sense. Forgettable in every other sense.

GSC genetics should bring some complexity and potency. Orange Skunk should bring the citrus brightness. Herijuana should add body and depth. None of those parentage characteristics showed up with any authority in what we smoked. The genetic promise is there on paper. The execution in this batch is not.

BRAND

Matter — Solid Brand, Weak Entry

Matter operates across multiple states and has established itself as a consistent mid-tier brand in New York’s licensed market. Their packaging is clean, their products are reliably tested, and their distribution is solid — you’ll find them at VereLeaf and other licensed spots across the city. None of that is in question here.

What is in question is this particular strain, in this particular batch. Orange Cookies from Matter feels like a product that exists to fill a menu slot more than to make a statement. At $35 for 3.5g it’s priced appropriately for what it is — just don’t expect it to be anything more than that.

FINAL VERDICT · ORANGE COOKIES — MATTER · 3.5G · $35

A great strain name. An average eighth. Move on.

Orange Cookies by Matter is not a bad product. It is a thoroughly unremarkable one. The genetics are interesting, the brand is reliable, the price is fair — and the experience delivers almost none of what any of those things suggest it should. A mild, low-ceiling sativa with a citrus note you have to go looking for is not what an Orange Cookies should be.

At $35 the damage is limited. But there are better eighths at this price point at any licensed dispensary in New York right now. Skip this one and put the $35 toward something that actually shows up when you spark it.
