THE NON-NEGOTIABLES
Every World Cup venue bans cannabis on site. The FIFA Fan Festivals across all seven NYNJ fan zones carry the same security screening as the stadiums. Alcohol is being sold inside stadiums for the first time since Qatar 2022 — but cannabis is a hard no at every official event space.
For international visitors, the stakes are higher. Cannabis is still a federally controlled substance in the United States. Getting caught with it can create entry and visa complications for non-citizens — even when you’re technically following state law. The safe play: treat your hotel room, a private rental, or a licensed consumption lounge as your only consumption space during the tournament.
Never cross state lines with cannabis. Even though both New York and New Jersey are legal states, transporting cannabis between them violates federal law.

Pro tip: Most NJ dispensaries open between 8–10am and close between 8–10pm. On high-volume match days — especially Brazil vs. Morocco (June 13), France vs. Senegal (June 16), and the Final (July 19) — expect lines. Go early or order ahead for pickup where available. And every licensed dispensary in the metro area expecting the highest-volume sales day they’ve ever seen.
Consider what’s converging: millions of tourists who have been in New York for weeks, many of them trying legal cannabis for the first time. Local fans who have been watching every match. A championship game with a 3pm ET kickoff — prime time for pre-game rituals. Hotel rooms, Airbnbs, and private rentals packed across both states. If you’re coming from Brazil, England, France, Morocco, Germany, Senegal, or most other countries in the world — cannabis is either fully illegal or heavily restricted where you live. New York and New Jersey are a fundamentally different environment.
You can walk into a licensed shop, show your passport, and legally purchase cannabis products. The products are regulated, lab-tested for potency and contaminants, and labeled accurately. This is not the street market. This is not a coffee shop with ambiguous rules. This is a licensed retail environment with trained staff who can tell you exactly what you’re buying.
The risk is in the consumption rules — and in the federal layer that still exists underneath everything.
